The commercial club certainly represents a long gone day when most business groups had secretaries to do much of the more specialized office work. Technology finally made most of this work unnecessary by the mid to late 1980s, as personal computers, word processors, copiers ("Xerox machines,"), FAX machines, and telephones on every office workers desk put the same work in the hands of every worker, and made it more efficient. By the late 1980s, even the word secretary because contentious as various movements declared that things like secretaries, housewives, and other activies that kept society functioning were now somehow demeaning. Of course "home ec" and other classes that help people run a home were similarly terminated.

Is society better now in the year 2004?
