Godwin did its part for the war. When the photographs of people in uniform were taken is not clear. It was common for people just out of high school to be given a great deal of responsibility during the war, and most rose to the challenge. Many did not ultimately return.

Just how much the material collection drives actually made a difference, and how much was to provide people on the home front a way to get involved, is not known. Here again, as in all major conflicts in the US, those on the home front were often little affected. People's jobs were more war oriented, but otherwise their daily routines were not much different than before the war started. Collection drives, and some more or less artificial shortages, were a small attempt to remind those on the the home front that there was a desparate battle looming in far away places.
