Rogers, Hardy, Croton dams - July 30, 2013

Rogers, Hardy, and Croton dams are primarily of interest today for the lakes behind them, and then the historic nature of each dam. Rogers and Croton dams were both built in and around 1907, and were notable for their advanced technology, including the highest volage transmission lines of the time. They were built to supply electricity to GR, and in a chicken and egg fashion, the avilability of the power created a demand for it. Some of the power was used to supply the interurban systems starting in GR and going to Kalamazoo, Holland, and Muskegon and Grand Haven.

Some of the history of each dam can be read on the plaques and information boards shown below. In year 2013 the power capacity of all three dams hardy justifies their upkeep, but Consumers Power is probably forced to maintain the dams themselves because of the recreational value of the lakes today.
