The ads characterize the surrounding area of the
school. The Division Avenue Bus Line was a major
transportation artery for those working in factories
in Grand Rapids. The service overlaped that of the
Michigan Electric Company interurban system, and
when that failed financically in about 1928, the
bus line was there to take up the slack.
The lumberyard might have been one of many at the time, reflecting the rapid growth of the area. As of 2003 they are all gone. John Buikema, of Godwin Heights Hardware, was active in school affairs. The hardware store, under a new roof, is still in business. |
