Apparently the early school board members were very effective,
because many of them served for many decades. Jay Doxtator,
Frank Bartels, and Frank Racket, were all of the board for
several decades. John Buikema ran a hardware store for many
years, located on Division Avenue, just south of 36th, on the
west side. Frank Rackett was a taxidermist, and a farmer until
aobut 1935 when he sold his land to the school. Frank Bartels
was a promoter of some sort for the area.
It's not clear what the day jobs of Jay Doxtator and Matilda Andre were. It's possible that her husband ran a gas staton on the southeast corner of Division and 36th. |
