One can only look activities like Camp Fire Girls, and scouting in general, today as victims of both politics and over crowding. In 1941 the area around Godwin still had a rural flavor. Frank Rackett could still lead field trips within a mile of the school. Much of the land was still farms. By the late 1950s the character of the area had changed a great deal, and scouting would not long after be declared a paramilitary activity, and largely die out. The indian motif of the Camp Fire Girls would likely draw protests and lawsuits today. One senses that today's students are the big losers in all this. |
