Like Jeeps, motorcycles were commonly available as war surplus after 1945. Many ex servicemen obtained them, and given the shortage of jobs for a while after the war, many roamed the country, and in some cases started clubs and gangs. The result was that motorcycles came to have a negative image, helped along by some grade B Hollywood movies. They retained that image until about 1960, when small, high quality motorbikes and motorcycles from Japan started arriving on US college campuses, and lent an air of respectibility to them again. |
