The radio shown in photograph above says a lot about life in 1947 yet. Few houses had television yet. Radio still played quality material, including a wide variety of music, plays, and serials. Radio differed from the television that would later replace it in that it engaged the mind to a greater degree. Radio mysteries often caused listers to stare in concentration, and develop mental images of what was happening. It also permitted people to do other mechanical pursuits while they listened if they chose. There were programs for all age groups, and programs for daytime, nightime, and on weekends. Thankfully, some of the material still exists on recordings today, and one can get a feeling for what an era now long gone was like. The radio itself shown in the photograph would be a valueable collectable today. |
