A measure of a changing world, the word janitor came under attack
in later decades, the and the fact that it is honest, necessary work came
to be seen as less important than whether the name had politically
incorrect connotations. One then saw "custodian," and flowery phrases
like maintenance engineer.
Today the work is often farmed out to "janitorial service" companies, which simply charge whatever it takes to get people to do the work. In 1948 many of the janitors had been on the job for decades. |
