Many residences still had 5 digit phone numbers in 1952. But new growth would demand more numbers, with the change to 7 digits the CH ( Cherry ) and GL ( Glendale ) exchanges were beginning to be phased in. Operators still handled long distance, and would do so until "direct dialing" was made possible by the concept of area codes, in perhaps 1960.
