Evelyn Barr was at Godwin in 1936 already, as shown in the
1936 commencement program. She also apprears in the 1938 annual, but, for some
reason, not the 1937 annual, where there is no mention of any band
at all. Her training was in
orchestra, and apparently she was involved in upgrading the Godwin orchestra
in 1938 already. Just what her role was is not clear, as Albert Smith became
the band director around 1940, but after he joined the service in 1942,
she became band director, and remained so until 1955.

Teacher Evelyn Barr in 1941.
From page 8 of the 1942 class annual, Evelyn Barr was director of orchestra at time the annual was made. She was probably also the de facto band director. Albert Smith joined the war effort, and while he did return to Godwin briefly after the war, it was probably Evelyn Barr that was doing the actually day to day work of running the Godwin band program. It would have been common to retain the title of someone who went in to the service during WWII, with the understanding that the person was officially only on leave, and had not relinquished their job. So it was likely that Evelyn Barr only officially became music director in 1946 or 1947, after Albert Smith did leave the Godwin system.
