1939 Major Bows program. The "Major Bowes' and his Original Amateur Hour" radio program ran from 1935 to 1945, originally on NBC, and later on CBS. Major Edward Bowes, shown above in 1942, died in 1946, and the program ended. For a decade it seems to have been wildly popular. Frank Sinatra in some sense got his start on the program, winning top prize in 1935 with his group, the Hoboken Four, and went on to sing on the program for several weeks.

On television the "Original Amateur Hour," with Ted Mack, ran from 1952 to 1970. The television version did not use the gong used on Major Bowes' show. Hearing the gong was the audio equivalent of the vaudville hook.

Page 3 contains mention of a coin and indian artifact collection that Frank Rackett might well have contributed to Godwin had he believed it would have been protected. What happened to those collections is unknown here.

The amount of material in Frank Rackett's various collections would indeed have provisioned a good size museum. Why Godwin was so indifferent to his good intentions is unclear, as is why the school took his flora and fauna collection without being able to properly house and protect it. As it is, a life's work, and a collection in part irreplaceable, fell victim to vandalism and neglect.

While the 1939 senior class play is of interest, the ads say something about the area and the times. The Southlawn Theater is a fixture of the neighborhood. A "Fresh Strawberry Sundae" for 10 cents. Would that even buy one strawberry in 2001? At Godwin Park "We Specialise in GOOD 5c Malteds." I guess this is why there were still penny stores as late as the 1950s.
