Continuing a pattern going back to the class of 1927, the women were the better performers academically. For some reason, the top scholars rarely got any mention in the class annuals in the late 1940s and early 1950s, perhaps reflecting how much the community valued classroom performance at the time.
After October 4, 1957, when Sputnik was launched by the USSR, fear and funding rejuvinated most secondary schools, and academic performace became more valued by both men and women. By the early 1960s the men were competing in the classroom almost as well as on the athletic field.
