Golden G Club purpose & scholarship program

The Golden G Club was formed in part to provide a general reunion activity for Godwin students that attended Godwin 50 and more years ago. The club was initiated by Adelaide ( Addie ) Grooters, class of 1944, and Bernard Smith, class of 1943. In many cases students were not able to graduate in the early 1940s because of their participation in WWII. Some effectively graduated later, and often chose a class to affiliate with.

Classes were much smaller in the 1930s and early 1940s. In many cases it is not always easy for class members to get a function together now. The Golden G Club helps in all these cases by providing all classes from 50 years before present a place to meet each year, and visit with classmates and students from different years that they probably knew.

The Golden G Club now maintains a scholarship program for Godwin students.

See Golden G Club & scholarship program. for details.

A program with Meijer's allows all Godwin alum to contribute to the scholarship fund as they shop. It costs you nothing, and a percentage of everything you buy goes to the scholarship fund each year. Be sure to use the number 723114.

The information above is from the December, 2007, issue of Godwin Newsletter. The Golden G Club, as it was known in the beginning, was created by Bernard Smith, class of 1943, and Adelaide Grooters, class of 1944. At some point it became apparent that the "Club" in Golden G Club had unwanted tax implications and the name was changed to just "Golden G."

Almond Foster, class of 1929, is shown seated in the white shirt in the photograph above. He will be 97 in October, 2007. With the recent death of Alice Fitzgerald, also class of 1929, Almond Foster is now the oldest living Godwin alumni. The second oldest in year 2007 is likely Naomi Doxtator, class of 1930, who is alive and well at 94 years of age, and living in Arizona.

For perspective, the school along Division Avenue was built in 1924 and 1925, and the first segment of the highschool building along 36th ( Allen Road at the time ) was built in 1929. Before 1924 Godwin was a one room schoolhouse, which was starting to become hopelessly overcrowded because of the growth of the local area. So Almond ( or "Al" as he was mostly known ) Foster spent at least half of his Godwin days in the one room school house, and the rest in the school building along Division Avenue.
