Clayton. In the town of Clayton, there stands a wonderfully preserved octagon house on 16 Court St. Benjamin Franklin Petty, who was a carriage and furniture merchant, built it in 1859. It's said to be the only surviving one in the state. It has a tall cupola circumvented with 4 chimneys. At one time both stories had a full porch but only a porch on the first story remains. Of Italianate styling it has paired brackets on the cornice and at each porch pillar. Petty, a pioneer settler, sold the home in 1901 to Judge and Mrs. Roberts. Owned and restored by the Town of Clayton.

View by appointment only. Said to be the only surviving antebellum octagonal house in the State of Alabama.
The photos below show the house at two different times. The one at the left is earlier, and shows the house when it had a two story porch. Clearly both levels of the porch have been modified substantially.

Huntsville. Partial octagon house. Built ca 1885 for John Van Valkenberg. Located at 205 Lowe Avenue, Huntsville, AL, 35801. The house was originally on the west side of Franklin Street, located between Williams and Gates Avenues. It was moved to its present location in about 1974. This is noted on the 1971 photograph below.

In 2006 the house is in the process of a significant rennovation.
