MISSOURI

Buchanan County

• St. Joseph A red brick home on 1423 Francis ave was at one time octagonally shaped. Its first mentioned in a 1922 book text as badly remodeled octagon house.. It was built in 1851 by William Harris.
  
  Harris died before project was finished.
  
  ( Its also been said it was conceived as an octagon house but never built. I tend to believe the former history since it was recorded as early as 1922.) Harris widow and children resided here until 1858 when it became property of Wm Carter. The Harris family moved into another octagon house near 26th & Frederick Ave. This house was later razed.
  
  James Hamilton purchased the octagon on Francis Ave. Hamilton died but his widow, son Edward & wife resided there Edward hired W Angelo Powell in 1875 to remodel it. An Italianate building with mansard roof resulted. Its extant in Buchanan CO. Within the house an early sketch was found on a ceiling joist showing parts of the octagon floor plan. Its known as the Edward Hamilton Historic Home. Photo attached.

• St. Joseph The house mentioned above near 26th & Frederick. It was standing in 1858 when the Harris moved into it. Sanborn maps dont go out that far. Need more info.

• St. Louis Octagon house. Built in 1937. 6520 Itaska Avenue. Built for Ralph A. Heinicke of St Louis Lithographing Co. It is red brick, and the basement has been converted into a garage.
  
  Note that St. Louis is not actually in St. Louis County, or any other county. Strangely, it is a city by itself.

• Harrisonville Octagon house. The Abner Dean home. Built in 1867. Located at 702 W. Wall Street.

Clay County.

• Kearney. Octagon schoolhouse. In Watkins Woolen Mill State Park. Nothing else known. School buildings like this were often converted in to homes at some point, but clearly not this one.

Cole County

• Jefferson City Octagon house. Old one story octagon stood at 424 E High Street at Jackson. Built after the Civil War, 2 sides of the stucco building were squared off in the mid 1890's. The home had a 3-walled back porch and a small front porch.  It stood until 1952. Chronicled in a January 20, 1952 newspaper. John Macknezie presumably built it after purchasing the land in 1866. His daughters Louisa & Margaret inherited . Upon their death, being left to heirs, they sold it to Sylvester KLohman and Edward Buel who in 1949 sold it to an insurance firm who owned it until 1952 demise.

DeKalb County

• Maysville Octagon schoolhouse. Referred to as a round-top school. Built in 1878, and operated until 1953. Extant as late as 1978. NE King Road and NE Heimbaugh Road.

Gasconade County.

• Hermann. Octagon house. Nothing else known.

Holt County

• Craig. Octagon house. Construction date unclear, but might well be the late 1800s based on the sidewalks, chimney, and the fact the house has run its course. It is now abandoned, and appears to be significantly deteriorated already. Craig is a rural town of 300, and perhaps dying in its own right. The chances that someone will renovate and occupy the house seem slim, and the chances that this one too will be lost seem good.

Johnson County

• Warrensburg. Octagon house. Now gone. Nothing else known.

Macon County

• Lyda Township. Octagon house. Built in 1860 by Samuel Eckerman Cormany. It is said that that house was left empty for about five years following its construction while Samuel Cormany served in the Civil War. During that time the usual forces, vandalism and the elements, worked on the house. Since the family moved back to the farm after the Civil War, it's quite possible that the house was restored. In 1868 the farm was sold. The fate of the house is not known.
  
  section 30 in Lyda township shows where the octagon house was located. The dark area on the right hand side is the town of Atlanta. Take 63 to Atlanta, take Rt M West into town, take Marion Street West out of town to blacktop RA, turn South on RA. The site would be on private land about a half mile South on RA.

Phelps County

• Rolla Octagon house. Elk Prairie.  Hamilton Lenox began construction of his octagon house in 1861 each side of the octagon was 10 feet long. When he left Phelps County, his octagon house was not yet completed but the  house was sold to pay his debts. The next owner finished construction. It unfortunately burned on Feb. 5, 1943.

• Powersville Octagonal house. Apparently built in 1881. Located at 510 State Highway East.

St. Louis County

• Glendale. Octagon house. Designed and built in 1886 by Demetrius Jannopoulo, president of the Missouri Tent and Awning Company. Originally included 22 acres, which in year 2009 are "developed." Burned in 1920. Rebuilt in 1926 by the orginal owner, using the 18 inch foundation that survived the fire. Located at 66 Berry Park Road.
