Natchez. "Longwood", octagon house. Very elaborate brick house with porches, bays, tower, onion dome. Designed by Samuel Sloan for Haller Nut, who is reputed to have had a pre-Civil War fortune of up to $10 million, and owned over a thousand slaves on four plantations. Construction began in the spring of 1860. The U.S. Civil War started, and it was never finished. Reputed to be the largest octagonal house in North America, it would have had four floors, and thirty two major rooms.

Hazelhurst An octagon house once stood in this Copiah Co. town . It sat on103 W. Railroad Ave. corner of Conway on 1897 Sanborn. In 1892 corner of Robinson.

Horn Lake. Octagon house. Built in 1844 for Dr. Samuel Raines.

At 6588 Horn lake Rd. Built in 1844 by Dr. Nathaniel Raines as a gift to his bride, Ann Eldridge,. The, eight-sided house is located on Horn Lake Road just south of Nail Road. Construction of the house was under the direction of William Gwinn. The original house was beautifully finished inside and out. Mr. Bryan Swilley has restored it to the grandeur it deserves. DeSoto County

Ocean Springs Octagon house. James Charnley a Chicago lumber baron built a guest cottage on the grounds of their 1890 home. East Beach Drive. Jackson County. 509 Shearwater Drive (E. Beach), Reportedly the main house was designed by Louis Sullivan and F.L. Wright. It burned in 1897 and was rebuilt. The octagon cottage was badly damaged in Katrina but had been rebuilt. The new one looks quite different from the original unless the open porch was enclosed prior to 1955.

Ocean Springs. W.G. Kendall built a schoolhouse for his children and the neighboring children near his residence in 1860. It had a hewn log base with each wooden side about eight feet in length. Sometime after the 1920s, the clapboard schoolhouse was converted into a residence. Located in Jackson County on Shearwater Dr, it was purchased by George Arndt. He moved it further east of the estate house and added a bedroom and kitchen in 1938. In 1950 the Arndts built a new home and again moved the octagon. The “schoolhouse residence” was destroyed by hurricane Camille in 1969.
