NEBRASKA

Buffalo County.

• East northeast of Gibbon. Octagon house. William Nutter built this grand farmhouse in rural Gibbon between 1886-88. The 1880 home boasted hot and cold running water and other modern conveniences. It stood on Sodtown Rd just n of Gibbon. An avid reader and farmer he died there in 1908. His wife Dinah died in 1929. At one time a porch surrounded 4 sides of the clapboard house. There was a gallery above it so in effect, a 2-story porch. Cresting encircled the peak of the roof in place of a cupola. In the 20th century the porch was replaced by a square, open porch with overhanging roof and supported by 2 pillars. The cresting was also removed. A more recent photo shows it abandoned, the sides gray and weathered. In 1982 a 4th generation Nutter resided there.

Douglas County

• Omaha. Octagon log house, built by Dr. Willard Richards in 1846. Current status unknown. Originally it was located in Winter Quarters, which is now part of Omaha, and located in the northeast section of town. Perhaps inspired by reading of Orson Fowler's book on phrenology. It is not clear exactly when Fowler began spreading the notion of the virtues of octagonal houses, but 1846 would be one of the earliest structures attributable to his movement.

• Ord. Octagon house. Built in or before 1924. Main floor: 970 square feet. Upper: 589 square feet. Basement 525 square feet. Located at 443 N 19th Street. The address in 1924 was 212 Western Avenue, which became 19th Street by 1933.
