• Hammonton. Octagon house. Built circa 1850s by Henry T. Pressey a wheelright on Central Avenue. His brother George W. Pressey was an inventor and among other things invented the Pressey folding umbrella and a ventilating stove. The American star bicycle and a Brooding incubator were his most famous inventions.

• Edgewater. Octagon house. Edgewater was originally a summer resort for wealthy New York families. They stayed at "the luxurious Octagon House built high on the Palisades."

• Garfield. Octagon house. Built in 1850. Located at 23 Orchard Street. This home was built by August Hasbrouck with brick exterior.He sold it to Daniel Van Winkle circa 1879; the house and 273 acres were sold, and the resulting estate was called "Belmont." The house had a one-story porch across front 3 walls and a flat roof with a cupola. Van Winkle died in 1886 and his heirs subdivided the land. Today, a front rectangular addition on front covers the octagon shape on both stories. POssibly enclosing the porch and adding a 2nd floor to the porch.) An aerial view does show the octagon house buried within that addition. It looks to be rental property. So far no photo of its original appearance has surfaced but see 1909 map image and Sanborn 1910 showing open front porch. A segment of a 1909 map of Garfield shows the house at the center of the image.

• Montvale. "The images below show the house over the years. It appears to have been maintained very well on the outside. Internally, the house has had many uses over time, so it's unclear how original the inside is. A newspaper piece, provided by the ELPuerzer archive, contains additional information and photographs.
  
  J. J. Blauvelt Jr., a rumored friend of Fowler's, constructed this 2 story concrete house. It has a small cupola which sits on a flat pitch roof surrounded by 4 ornate chimneys It had a porch that encircled the entire house at one time. Blauvelt, his wife and three daughters lived in the house until his death in 1882. His family lived in the house until his death and later his daughter Jane Amelia and his son-in-law Garret F. Hering lived there. He died intestate, in Montvale, on January 3, 1882, and is buried with his wife in Westwood. February 3, 1882, in Bergen Co. The house has had many owners over the years; Montvale's 2nd mayor Garret Herring and his wife
  
  Blauvetts daughter) lived here in 1900 (One of 3 mayors who made this their home: other 2 were Jules Schwenker and George Huff.).
  
  It was a Chicken Shack restaurant in the 1940s. Then George Huff and his wife Agnes bought the house in 1955 and operated a very fine restaurant there for almost four years. Currently owned by John and Doris Sudich who use it for their business, Perfect Limo."

Cape May County.

• Cape May City. Octagon house. Built for Josiah Schellinger about 1860. Located at 1386 Lafayette Street, just after crossing over a second and smaller bridge when entering Cape May City from the north. Two story. Well maintained. Listed with the National Register of Historic Places.
  
  Maureen L. Coleman relates:
  
  My Great Grandparents lived in this house after Mr. Schellinger -- the Marge and Edward Schofield's, Grandmother fell in love with it, and my Pop granted her wishes. They were happily married for nearly 75 years, until he passed. My Great Grandmother, Margaret, stayed in the house for about two years after he passed, then moved to an assisted living facility. Her daughter, my maternal Grandmother, Barbara Gattuso, then took over caring for The Octagon House using it as a summer home for quite a few years, and had renovations done in between seasons. She sold it a few years back. I do remember a lot of physical attributes of this beautiful house. The ceilings were all very high. I remember 3 bedrooms upstairs, and a full bathroom. I don't know if the claw-foot bathtub is still there, but it was beautiful. I do remember an oddly shaped, skinny hallway upstairs leading to a spare bedroom. Oil lamps were spaced strategically on the walls, especially up the curved staircase. The staircase bannister was exceptionally wide, and curled at the bottom. The stained glass window above the front door matched the original drab-green color of the house. I remember people walking by throughout the summer asking my Great-Grandparents if the rooms inside were square or angled, which they weren't. Just the 1/2 bath on the first floor. My Pop was tickled to answer any questions, and gratefully received compliments. I'm so thankful for the information you two have posted about the history of the home. I miss it, and some of my best childhood memories were there.

  The following photograph was taken in the summer of 2006. It's likely that the house is now painted in period colors. There were not a lot of paint colors available in the 1860s. Most were quite drab, with the exception of blue and red. Unless the colors were mentioned in a diary, or some other document, the colors are probably just a reasonable guess - it's not known how the owners selected the color scheme.

  Today the house appears to be in about the same condition as it was in the 1950s. A guess, perhaps its primary function as a summer residence allowed it to escape the incessant modifications seen by most year around octagon homes.

• Cedar Grove Gideon G. Updike first attended school at Cedar Grove, New Jersey, the school building being a small structure, eight cornered and built of niggerhead stone.

• Newark. Located at 402 S. 10th St. Built before 1873. Newark is home to one of the lesser-known octagon houses. It’s a 3-story brick building, painted yellow. In 1873 extant and owned by S. H. Reybold (Reibold--original builder/owner?) ). In 1889 it was owned by George H Hutchins and the lot across from it still owned by Reybold. The roof is flat and all lintels are slightly curved. The walls are each 10 feet long. Now in a rundown neighborhood, was rental property for quite some time. It has a long addition, extending 26 feet in the rear,evident in the earliest maps. Currently the lot also contains Fernandez Auto repair. .The house went through a city foreclosure in the 1980s – the property was bought in 2006 for $340,000 by Fausto Gonzalez, who has the same mailing address. (Block 282, Lots 38-39) – according to records in assessment office.

• Newark 109 Grafton Ave near Broadway, Essex County Built: 1858 Status: gone This octagon was a concrete house built for a widow with 3 daughters who came from Paramus, N.J. The house originally faced north, but it later faced south, toward Grafton Avenue. The 1926 atlas shows a narrow wooden house with 8 unequal sides. The front, back and sides were long and the corners shorter or beveled. . In the 1960s Walter and Isobel Lee resided there. Now gone. 109 Grafton Ave. (Block 775, Lot 29) - the 1926 atlas shows a narrow house with 8 sides on the lot, which is 30x130' - the city surveyor pointed out to me that the atlas drawing shows walls of unequal length; the front, back, and sides are fairly long but the four corners are quite short - it looked "beveled," in the words of the surveyor. A sketch done in 1957 for the assessor's office shows side walls of 26 feet, front and back of only 10 feet, and four corner walls each 4 feet long. The total area of the house is 580 square feet. I remember that the City's Historic Sites and Buildings Committee, which was active in 1960-61, took brief notice of this house in its survey of local buildings, but gave it no special recognition - I don’t have all of the committee's minutes, and don’t know where they might be now - I do have a single page of notes about 109 Grafton Ave., which I took while serving for a while on the committee. The notes indicate that the house was occupied at the time by a Walter and Isobel Lee Supposedly it was part of a Jane Edgecomb estate, and had been shown on an 1873 map (which I haven't seen) - It was mentioned in a book called Woodside, written by C.G. Hine and published in 1909 - I don't have a copy handy - Hine called it one of the last of the old houses in the Woodside neighborhood, and said it had been built about 1858 for a widow with 3 daughters who came from Paramus, N.J. - he said it was built on a road known as Division Road or Boot Leg Lane, which extended westward from the Passaic River; that road preceded the later Grafton Avenue and Halleck Street - Hine said the house originally faced north, but it later faced south, toward Grafton Avenue.I remember seeing this house and taking a couple pictures of it, but can't find them now - I am trying to see if there are any photos at the Newark Library.

• Orange. Mention of this octagon house was in an 1856 newspaper advertisement.( see clipping) "The octagon house and lot for sale, 5 minutes walk from the depot. It was listed for $4,000 in Essex County." This might date the house to 1856. It stood at 316 Elm St. between Park and Hillyer on 1885 map. On 1890 map address is 46 Elm and owned by J.E. Jones with altered appearance. Gone by 1895 maps and address is 46. The townhouse with corner towers that replaced it is still standing and is 109 Elm St.

Hunterdon County

• Dilt's Corners A.k.a. Sandy Ridge, in Delaware Township. The Van Dolah stone school, District 96, stood on Mt Airy Rd.near Sandy Ridge in Delaware County. Erected in 1822, Hunterdon Co NJ.it was a half mile from Sandy Hill church.
  
  Two separate buildings housed Van Dolah School students over the years. The historic Van Dolah farm on Sandy Ridge Mt Airy Rd was across the street when the first school was built of stone in 1822. It stood until 1908. Trenton Evening Times, 15 Jun 1907.
  
  At the special school meeting held at Sergeantsville the voters of Delaware township appropriated $1,600 for the purpose of building and furnishing a new frame school house at Van Dolah's, in District 5. The old "eight-sided" stone structure which has served since 1822 and is the last of the kind in the county, will be torn away (1908) and the stone used for the foundation of the new building, which will occupy the same site.

• Grandin Near Bethlehem Presbyterian church in Grandin a stone octagonal school was erected in 1838-39. It was replaced by 1881.

Mercer County.

• Hightstown. Octagon house. 239 S. Main St. (old # was 709 Main) Mercer County Built: circa 1857 according to their Historical Society.
  
  J.S. Ely built this stucco home for Dr. Calvin Bartholomew, a homeopathic physician.The house still stands in Hightstown on the Peddie campus although many alterations have been made to the exterior. The cost to build was $450. The front porch originally an Eastlake style hung on the front wall 3 walls but now a replacement porch stretches across 3 sides and a large rectangular addition is on the back wall. All the windows were built slightly recessed into the clapboard walls. The house has a wide molded cornice, repeated on the cupola. For the supernatural fans out there: Some time after Dr Bartholomew’s death, Miss Carrie Hutchinson moved in. She replace the stucco exterior with clapboards as seen on 1909 photo below. She added the amber windows. It’s said she died mysteriously, her body found on a window seat. After Carrie’s death, it became a favorite “mystery” house. J Beekman owned it in 1875 on Mercer Co map. In 1896 Hiram Deats of the Peddie school board purchased it and presented it to school. The headmaster, Roger Swetland resided there from 1898 to his 1934 death in an upstairs bedroom.. Many alterations and additions have been made but the front still shows the octagonal shape. It’s being preserved but has been vinyl sided.Its residence to 2 professors and the cupola cannot be viewed from the inside.

• Trenton Octagon house. Built in the 1850s. It was referred to as the old octagon house in a 1910 newspaper piece. It was owned by Joseph Potts, and, later, Samuel K. Wilson. Located at 212 Greenwood Avenue. The address does not exist in year 2011, and it's likely the land the house once sat on has been significantly modified, with the introduction of freeways, new homes, and commerical structures in the area. The interior of the house was salvaged, and the house razed after 1905 to make room for smaller houses.

Monmouth County.

• Belford ( Middletown ). Octagon house. Probably built 1853, by Henry Lube. Located at 25 Church Street. According to Donald Schulze the house was gutted by a fire in 1975. The house was razed, although the town attempted to restore it, as seen in the articles below. A brand new house was erect, resembling the original.

• Bradley Beach. Octagon house. 216 LaReine Avenue, Bradley Beach Monmouth County. Built: circa 1920. An 8-sided house of uneven sides was built in this community one and a half blocks from the beach. The 4 larger walls have dormers. The front wall is recessed under the porch. Clapboard siding is now covered with vinyl. Estimated value in 2018 at $635,600.

• Freehold Township Near Allendale. Octagon schoolhouse. Built in 1819, the East Branch Octagonal School stood at East Branch and Eldridge Rd. A chimney pierced the steeply pitched roof. The front entrance was through a slant-roofed vestibule. According to Randall Gabrielan, a N.J. historian, it was around in the 1930s . Gone now. Monmouth Co.

• Fair Haven Octagon house. Two old maps of the town show a probable round/octagonal home owned by James Scott overlooking Navesink River. It is still standing at 48 Gillespie Ave and is rumored to be from 1812. There is no indication of any octagonal walls today. In it's early history it was used for a boarding house.

• Red Bank An 1887 article mentions George B. Standt (who owned the Seabright octagon house hotel) bought a huge plot of land to build an octagonal house in Red Bank for a  winter residence. He sold it to John & Mary Wood in 1898 and moved to Glen Ridge. In 1920 sold to Sigmund Eisner and he sold to Macdonald who razed the property. According to his obit it stood on Broad and Leroy. An 1888 article describes the house interior as octagon in shape with a large dome in center admitting light to the hall. Standt who served as red Bank mayor,  was so famous as to have a steamer named after him.

Morris County.

• Boonton. Octagon house. The Garrett V. S. Rickards Octagon House, at 211 Cornelia Street. Built in 1854. Rickards and Myers sought employment at the Troy, NY, iron works while the Boonton Iron Works were temporarily shut down. Seeing octagon homes in the Troy area, they bought land from the Boonton Iron Works when they returned around 1854 and constructed octagon homes. Slag from the Iron Works was used in place of gravel in the concrete, in keeping with Orson Fowler's edict to built the houses at the lowest possible cost.
  The current owner recently obtained the house from a grandfather, who owned it for 70 years. He is now in the process of a complete restoration.

• Mount Tabor Bethel Pavilion octagon house. The Bethel Tent pavilion: built 1869 Pavilion enclosed: 1886 This building was initially erected as an open-sided prayer pavilion for religious services and meetings. The one-story octagon is topped with a low pitched octagonal hip roof and square cupola. The eave trim, now missing, would once have duplicated that seen on the Library, across Trinity Park. Note the large double hung 6/6 sash windows. The original exterior siding was board and batten. After enclosure it was known as the "Children's Pavilion" . The shed roof vestibule was added to the front entrance in the 1940s.

• Mount Tabor Ebenezer Pavilion octagon house. Mount Tabor NJ - Ebenezer Pavilion erected: 1873 Pavilion enclosed: 1901. While the Ebenezer Pavilion and the Bethel Pavilion, across Trinity Park, were virtually identical prior to enclosure, this one retains more of its original character. The flat roof portico supported by four Tuscan columns dates to the enclosure of the building in 1901. The building is now a branch of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library.

• Riverdale. Octagon house. Built in the 19th century. Located on route 23. A 2-story octagon with cupola and a Victorian cornice has an unknown builder . Census data provided by DB Morris County Library. According to the 1940 Census Thomas and Dorothy Mandeville resided there in 1930s and 40s. In the 1950s it was used as a roadside refreshment stand. There was a large porch on several walls. It was razed in 1973.

Salem County.

• Penns Grove. Octagon school house. Penn's Grove, NJ, but there is presently no town by this name. A single story fieldstone octagonal school was constructed here in this borough of Salem County. Its current status isn't known but most likely gone. The school built in 1821 had a plaque over the door with its name. It was used as a Military post in WWII.

Somerset County

• Somerville. The Richard Hoaglund octagon house. Built in 1854. 57 S. Bridge Street, on the intersection of Franklin Street. Two story. Apparently brick, but painted. Cross gabled metal roof. A Queen Anne tower with a shingle conical roof was added later. A large, ornate carriage house in the back disappeared in a fire in about August, 2001, and is now a black top parking lot. Looking at the four views shown in the photographs below, it appears that the house has been modified many times over the years, and is now at least a duplex. The gables on four of the sides are somewhat unusual.

  It's clear that the house has become some kind of rental property. Looking at the 1882 panoramic map, there is reason to believe that the rectangular addition in the back is old, if not necessarily original. Appearing in the panoramic map, it is older than the round tower structure, which is not original with the house either, since it does not appear in the 1882 panoramic map above. Already 28 years old when the panoramic map was produced, it's not clear whether the house ever had a large veranda. Being so close to the road, it seems unlikely, but they were common features of octagonal houses of this age.

  The 1873 map above above, shows an ornate carriage house already. It might have been built with the house. The rectangular box on the house might or might now have been orginal, but it apparently dates to about 1858. The round turret was added some time betwee 1885 and 1890, as well as a large porch that covered or partially covered five sides. The porch then disappeared again. Additions often showed up shortly after a house was built, but in this case the additions went on over decades.

  Marge Sullivan, of the Somerville Historical Commission, took the two photographs above of the carriage house about 6 months before it burned to the ground. Today the location is a blacktop parking lot. The one on the left shows the relation of the carriage house to the house, and the second gives an indication of the size of the structure, which was apparently three stories. As mostly happens, the carriage house was given even less care over the years than the house itself, but nevertheless appears to be in reasonably good condition for its age.

Sussex County

• Frankford Plains Octagon house. United Methodist church purchased the old Frankford Plains school house in 1965. (Built mid 1850s.) This land and schoolhouse building were bought from Mrs. Linden Smith. The schoolhouse had been converted to a home by the Smith’s and the church transformed it into an educational building. Along with the schoolhouse the church purchased the adjoining land. It stands at 99 Plains Road, Augusta, NJ.

Warren County

• Asbury Octagon house. In Warren county an octagonal school was built in early 1800's and burned down in 1868 -- was replaced with a larger school. It stood on Bloomsbury Rd.

• Hackettstown. Octagon house. 650 Washington St. It was built in 1859 for Joseph (or John) Rice for $450.00. It always had the one story porch encircling the home. The glass in many windows is still the hand blown original. All of them are not actual windows - a couple are dummies for symmetry. The doors all have functional transoms. One of the 1st floor bedrooms became the kitchen, which had been located originally in the basement as was the custom in the 19th century. There are 3 bedrooms. A bathroom on the second floor contains the stairway that leads to the attic, which has a recently added skylight. Sold by Dr Cook around 1900 to Mary W. Dufford. In 1916 John Sherer purchased the home from the Dufford Estate and in 1937 Joseph Sherer still lived there. 1902 Sanborn has address as 502 Washington at Warren. By 1914 it had the current address.

• Hope. Octagon schoolhouse. Built in 1835.

• Johnsonburg. Octagon house. Built in 1853, by John C. Gibbs, a carpenter. Located on Dark Moon Road. An 1874 map shows it as the home of Mrs. Hart. Being restored as of about 1990. The outer stucco has been removed. Nicolas Latimer owned the home from 2003 to 2010.
  
  The images below show the house over the years. The exterior stucco has been removed, and work done to the inside. Whether the bare interior stone walls are in any way a renovation is unclear.

• Knowlton. Octagon schoolhouse. The Fairview school, Warren County, built in 1835 is located at about 54 Auble Road, on the Fairview cemetery grounds. Stucco exterior shown on undated photo. It was replaced with a new schoolhouse in 1897. Cost of building was $100. Still standing where Dean Rd becomes Aubile Rd but boarded up. Has an octagonal chimney.
