Dandridge. Hexagon house. Built in 1905 by Sam Bettis, of Dandridge. Currently owned by Frances Mitchell. Located at 226 E. Meeting Street, near the intersection of Hill Street. It was originally clapboard construction, now vinyl sided, and a wide chimney crowns the steel roof . The porch encircles the house except where a room has been extended. Recently owned by Frances Mitchell. Shown in black and white photo pre siding. In recent publications mis-identified as the Bettis hexagon which was one story.

Dandridge. Hexagon (needs verification) log house. Built before 1905, also by Sam Beattis. Stood off Killion Road. Torn down around 1999. A spring fed pond was located near the house. The pond would rise during heavy rains and cut the house off from the road, as can be seen in one of the photographs below.

Shieldstown. Later Knoxville. Octagon house. The hamlet of Shieldsville was established by John Howard Shields by 1859. The Shields family lived in an octagon mansion at 1640 Magnolia Avenue, today the site of Pellissippi College.

Jackson. Round house. Built in or before 1870. Located on Short Street and the intersection of Main Street. Also next to the Mobile & Ohio RR. This might be the same house as the one below, and was moved.

Jackson Octagon house.

There was an octagon house in Jackson, but a block or so away from the site of the 1870 map and not until 1890 Jack D. Wood Tennessee Room Librarian: Pertaining to the one in the 1870 view, I have not seen any other descriptive or corroborating evidence. It does not show up in the 1877 D.G. Beers map of Jackson, TN The one that I have known about first appears on the 1890 Sanborn map for Jackson, TN on the west side of Short St. between E. Main St (to the north) and E. Baltimore St. (to the south). The north-south Mobile and Ohio RR tracks are to the west. It remains on existing Sanborn maps through a 1942 revision, but is absent in a 1955 revision. It is drawn as a round structure until the 1912 Sanborn map, which shows it to be octagon.

Rives City. Octagon barbershop. Built about 1894. Located at High and North Church Streets. Added to the NRHP in 1975, when it was already vacant.

Union City. Octagon house. 843 Railroad at the NE corner of the intersection with Bell St. Built about 1870. Now gone. Originally a one story octagon, and later made square. It was a single story dwelling in 1897.

Gallatin. Gallatin TN had an octagon on E. Franklin St. Sumner County built circa 1850.

Colonel Thomas Boyers was one of the co-founders of the old Nashville American and later the Gallatin Examiner. He hired Andrew Jackson Caldwell to build his concrete octagon house before the War Between the States. It was a single story with a cement exterior. The roof had gables on 4 sides. A front porch was rather basic, a slanted roof supported by plain pillars. The front door had sidelights.

When Boyers was away with Morgan’s Raiders in Virginia during the Civil War, Yankee soldiers used his home for stables. Ed Lane, circuit court clerk in Sumner County, owned it in the 1950s. It was demolished in the 1970s to make way for low-rent apartments.
