Salt Lake County

• Salt Lake City Octagon house. The information plaque suggests the house existed in 1861. Other sources say it was built in 1856. Located at East 2nd South (200 East & 200 South, N.E. Corner ). Razed in 1927 to make room for a service station and seven store. Other sources say 1926, and still others 1938.
  
  Ellen Puerzer provides the following information:
  
  Salt Lake City William S. Godbe House-1870 East 2nd. South. (200 East & 200 South N.E. corner) 2-story house. According to Hampton Godbe: "it was located on the corner of 2nd. South & 200 East Streets. Constructed by William S. Godbe, with three apartments, the idea being to provide housing for his three wives, Annie, Rosina, and Mary. However, the Godbes never occupied the dwelling. Having apostatized, Wm. S. renounced Rosina and Mary as wives, although he continued to support them and their children."
  
  Became part of part of the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute of the Presbyterian Church by 1905 .The Octagon was a 14 room dwelling that would become the early boarding department of the Salt Lake Collegiate.
  
  Godbe built a second non octagon house for himself a few blocks away by 1880.
  
  An 1874 newspaper clipping makes it clear that all photos showing the house as a mostly stand alone structure are dated 1874 or before.

• Salt Lake City A second octagonal house belonged to George Goddard and was located on the 2nd Street at 3rd East Street. It was smaller than the Godbe house but still appeared to be 2 stories and stood behind a long rectangular house. It was built in 1862 and was demolished in 1881. It is visible on the 1870 bird's eye view of Salt Lake. and on the undated photo. This photo precedes the construction of the Presbyterian Church.

• Salt Lake City Octagon house. The William B. Douglall residence. Built before 1886. Located at 49 North West Temple, on a lot given to Maria Douglall by her father, Brigham Young. An addition was made to the house in 1886, and in 1906 it was sold to John R. Winder, who lived in it for about 6 years.

Sanpete County

• Moroni Octagon house. Built about 1865 by Lewis Hatch. Multi-story. The first floor was brick, and under ground. The windows had shutters two inches thick, to literally help ward off indian attacks. Many neighbors would stay at the house during times of indian raids.

Utah County

• Provo 500 West & 100 North Sts. Utah County Built: completed in 1860. Status: Gone (1900 sanborn map shows corner house.) (and 100 North is 8th,) Henry Larkin Southworth built his octagon house on the SW corner of 500 West, 100 North in 1860. The home was built with adobe bricks, paired windows and simple styled. Jeremiah Robey and Edwin Bunnell worked on the building as carpenters and cabinet makers. Reportedly it had 18 rooms.. It served as a store and residence for Southworth. He became postmaster in 1861 and the house served as the postoffice. He lost the home to his partner Benjamin Bachman who rented it to in 1871 to Truman Swarthout who ran it as a hotel. Lucinda Kempman Southworth owned a profitable mine in Nevada and was able to re-purchase the octagon in 1878. By 1881 they operated the home as a boarding house. It is my contention that between the time the house was lost and reclaimed—1872-78, is when Judge Strickland resided here—possibly renting it from Bachman and when it was used as the Mason’s lodge # 4 which used it from 1871 to 1875..The Judge was the Grand Master at that time. (There weren’t 2 octagon houses in this town. Southworth died in Salt Lake City in 1901. His 3 children inherited the octagon. Hyran H resided here until his 1938 death at which time it was razed for a gas station. The Story of Provo, Utah (Provo, UT: Moffitt, 1975) that the Octagon hotel was built in the 1860s by Samuel Liddiard. Perhaps Liddiard did the actual construction work on the structure being built for Southworth?
