WEST VIRGINIA

Berekely County.

• Martinsburg. Near Gerrardstwon. Also called Mill Creek. Octagon house. Built in 1879-80 by John W. Wiest for John McKown. Purchased by the National Fruit Company and reportedly moved to an unknown site. An old photo shows it as two stories with a widow's walk on the roof. Originally vertical board exterior, the boards were later replaced with horizontal boards. The home had a one wall frame porch on the front. The windows were all 4-payne, one per side, and the cornice held brackets. Gerrardstown was in Southern Berkeley County.

• Bethany. Octagon study. On Route 67. Built about 1835. Said to be "Alex Campbell's old schoolhouse," Campbell founded Bethany college. Small cupola.

• Capon Springs. Octagon house. Built c1870. Originally Frye's Springs, and later the town of Watson. Octagon house. Located on Capon Springs Road ( County route 16 ), between the intersections of Mcllwee Road and Back Creek Road..

Jefferson County

• Charleston Octagon schoolhouse. Col. Charles Washington estate built in 1780, includes a wooden octagonal schoolhouse originally built as a powder house. He was the brother Of President Geo Washington and the man Charlestown was named after.. Stands at George St at Blakely Pla. (Route 340 & route 9.) The extant estate and school are known as Happy Retreat The white schoolhouse is similar to the one that stood at Mount Vernon.
